Tonal gym combines electromagnets and AI technology to bring a gym to your home, for a premium price.
The technology is actually pretty awesome once you realize what Tonal does. It’s like a Bowflex home gym (remember those?) shrunk down to fit on your wall.
On top of the convenient space saving technology, Tonal offers AI to personalize resistance during your workouts, and offers on demand workouts from certified trainers.
How Did They Shrink a Gym?
Magnets. Electromagnets to be exact. Electromagnets are pretty cool, their power changes as more or less electricity runs through them. What does this mean? Tonal can provide variable resistance with software. That’s why they don’t need the Bowflex style flexible bows, weighted plates, or barbells to provide resistance.
Coach AI
Aside from saving space, another benefit of having electromagnets provide the resistance is that the Tonal system can manage and track resistance through software. This means that if you’re on your last rep, struggling to finish, Tonal can tone down the resistance to act like a spotter (whoah!).
Accessories
Tonal has a few accessories that attach to the system, including standard handles, a bar, and rope handles. They also offer branded benches and workout mats.
How Much is Tonal Gym?
$2,995 + tax, delivery, and a $49/mo membership.
Tonal Gym is not meant to be accessible. The cost of production, research & development, and marketing for the product are probably really high for Tonal, making the final product unaffordable to most.
Is It Worth It?
If you’ve got the disposable income and really prefer being home versus going to a gym, Tonal can be a great investment. Their software and training programs should also get better over time, making it more of an all-in-one gym.
